The small pup’s voice echoed through the dark of the den. He couldn’t sleep. It was famine-time of the year and he was starving. His mother had run out of milk, and he couldn’t eat carcass yet.
“Yes, my precious?” his mother’s weary bark reassured him. “What’s wrong, my cub? Can you not sleep?”
“Can you…” The pup flicked through all his desires in his mind. Food, water… His sister still alive. He knew none of these could be solved, however much he wanted them. “Can you tell me a story?” he asked finally.
His mother nuzzled him, drawing him closer with a sweep of her long, pluming tail. “Of course dear one,” she whispered.
The pup yipped in excitement, only stopping when his parched throat screamed for water.
